Nice moment with Ben Richardson of @ridgelinepottery around the kiln tonight. The beginning of a firing is always a favorite time of mine. I’m often on a tight schedule to get the kiln loaded, and I love loading but there often can be a pressure to get it done for deadlines and such. Once the fire is lit, it often feels like a relief, like I can finally sit down and take a break, because there is really no sense of urgency in the beginning of a burn. There is only the fire and it’s pace. It always feel like a good time to take a moment and remember. #ceramics #momentsofteflection #woodfire #woodkiln #kiln #momentsofcontemplation

An image of some pots, kilns, and a toy truck from a visit to Valley Plains Pottery to hang with Zak Chalmers and his family last weekend in Gippsland. Zak is among the top new generation of woodfirers in Australia, and someone who I personally feel has put together the whole package: he’s making great work in a sweet set up, selling primarily direct out of his own very well displayed gallery… He built a great house on an awesome block of land and is a raising a family with his wife AND making a living being a potter! We all know how hard it can be out there and Zak is making it happen, which I applaud. Check out @zakchalmers to see more images. #community #potterytour #zakchalmers #adventure #australia

Revisiting some images from On the Edge of the Shelf. Loving this one of everyone checking out the work from the firing right after the unloading. It’s always the hardest time for me, managing my expectations and trying to see the work for what it is instead of getting caught up in what I thought it should be. It’s certainly a little bit easier in these environments than back home where so much is riding on the results and your in control of more of the variables. All in all, the firing felt like a success, certainly given the inherit difficulties of firing a new kiln for the first time in a different country with unknown materials. And of course it goes down in history for being a legendary good time! #ceramics #ontheedgeoftheshelf #woodfire #woodkiln #community #kiln #adventure #australia #joshcopus

Just got back to @ridgelinepottery down in Tassie, after my whirlwind pottery tour and big city experience up on the mainland and it’s good to be home. I did quite a bit of driving the last couple of days, which is challenging and pretty stressful to say the least for someone accustomed to driving on the other side of the road. Basically all of your intuitions about traffic patterns are wrong and the little internal warning sensation that says your in danger is always going off. And all the controls are backwards, so pretty much every time I change lanes I turn the windshield wipers on, before remembering that I signal with my right hand. But no one was injured and I really only got honked at once, and I managed to drive in downtown Melbourne in peak traffic, in the rain, at night and live to tell about it. #adventure #drivinginaustraliaishard #potterytour
