Yesterday was the last public day for the Big House Brick Factory. We took a little moment to celebrate with a toast that Emily surprise organized at the end of the day. Our dear friend Rob Amberg, who is one of my favorite humans on this planet, made this photograph of Emily and I.
I like it and I just thought I would share it.
I would also like to recommend that everyone follow @robamberg and check out his website robamberg.com

The brick factory had our biggest day on record yesterday!! We made 249 bricks!! It was amazing.
Thanks to everyone who came out and participated and made our last public day such a success.
The public participation part of the Old Marshall Jail Brick Project has now come to an end. We will continue to produce bricks that are specific to the history of the jail and we still have a very ambitious program with the local schools still to come. The oral history story collecting video project will also continue for many months to come.
The project to this point has been a huge success. We’ve produced close to 3,000 unique bricks of personal expression with the people of this world. Folks of all types have come and made their mark. We’ve made memorial bricks, serious bricks, silly bricks, bricks that say things that are important to people.
The brick factory has been a place for public dialogue. It’s a place that brings people together and reminds us that all of our viewpoints are real and important.
Generational natives of Madison County have made bricks beside folks who have moved in from off… and gotten to know each other. Tourists have made bricks and promised to come back to our town to find their brick in the future.
Little kids have made bricks and will grow up having a connection to this place because their brick will always be here in perpetuity. That makes me the happiest to think about.
I’ve learned so much through this process. About people and about the history of Madison County. I’ve met so many new people. I’m so grateful for that.
I’m glad that we’ve come to this point. It’s time for me to be done with it. I’m tired. I know I’ll miss it, but even the best things can’t last forever.
A special thanks to my dear friends Rachel and Anna for coming out and posing for this picture. @annareelo
And super special thanks to my loving partner @carolinaflowers_ for all the support through this project.

Last two public days of the Brick Factory are today (Friday) and Saturday. We’ve made over 2,000 bricks so far and it’s still not to late for you to be included.
If you’ve been meaning to make it out and haven’t yet… now is the time for action. I don’t want you to feel disappointed when the monument is installed at the jail and you don’t have a brick in it.

This year has been a lot… and I’ve been feeling it recently.
The jail. The brick factory. The farm. The land. The house. The pottery. The Clayspace. The woodfire conference. Penland. The new studio. The emails… It has felt like the type of year that we will look back on and say “damn… that year was insane…”
We do love it and I can’t image not doing any of it… but I’m ready for so winter hibernation for real.
@clarkhodgin made this picture of me in the jail earlier this year. I felt tired then too…
Maybe I was better at hiding it.
