It really doesn’t ever stop.

Happy birthday America!
I’m in my usual full embrace of Gatlinburg as I teach at the Arrowmont craft school.
I’ve taught ceramics all over the world but there is really no place like Gatlinburg, especially Gatlinburg during the 4th of July!

Sweet moments around the fire.
Emily and I always do the first overnight of the firing together. We call it the “sleep fire”… which means she sleeps and I fire.
I actually do get a little sleep. I stoke the kiln every 30 minutes or so. It’s sort of like sleeping with a snooze alarm, except my clock is internal. Sometimes I like to think I’m training for having an infant.
We make a bed and a big pile of wood right next to the kiln so all I have to do is roll over and toss a bit on.
I actually love sleep fire night. It’s feels like camping or being in a pillow fort or something like that.
I’ve thought about preheating with gas on the first overnight but I honestly like candleing with wood. It’s part of our tradition.
I don’t do the 2nd or 3rd overnights of the firing.
I worked the graveyard for years on other people’s kilns. But now that I’m running my own show it’s up to the kids to run the overnight.
But I’m always glad to do the first sleep fire night with my wife and the cat that lives at our land, Jean Claude Meow.

Thanks to @mattwegleitner for being our friend and capturing this sweet moment.
Loading game is strong.
We finished the pack last night and lit the kiln.
We will finish the firing on Thursday.
I think this is number 50 in the temple, but I’m a little unsure. It might be 51.

Filling up the studio.
Firing this coming week… gonna be a bunch of greenware going in the the kiln that’s for sure!
It’s been a blur the past few days.
I almost postponed the firing because of all the stuff we’ve got going on to get ready for our grand opening in July.
We have enough pots to pull it off, but it’s hard for me to truly get excited about work that’s been around for a bit… even if it’s just from April.
My whole attitude towards life hinges on enthusiasm and I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t fire before the home show. I would feel like I left something on the table.
Since I’ll be teaching for the 3 weeks leading up to the home show on July 20-21… this is my only window.
So as usual, I jumped out of it.

Marshall’s mermaid parade never disappoints. Yet another reason why we are so partial to Marshall.

“Audible Shapes” will be up at @bmcmuseum till August 31st. We had a great opening reception last night, but it was noisy with all the talking of course.
If your in Asheville, I would really recommend going to check out the show during a quieter time so you can really experience the audio.
It’s the full deal.
I really like this work, and the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and collaborate with @jenn8grossman has been a great experience.
Thanks to the whole staff for being so awesome.

Tristan likes what he hears.
My installation at the @bmcmuseum is a collaboration with NYC sound artist @jenn8grossman
She came out to the land and recorded the sounds of that place. The sounds of the natural world that surrounds me while I work. The cacophony of frogs at dusk and the sound of the stream.
She also recorded sounds from the studio. The processes and tools that I used to make these pieces.
We then installed speakers in all the vessels that play back the sounds that have been composed and all mixed together.
All the pieces are raw wild clay. They were transported and installed at the leather hard stage. Each piece is coated in a liquid clay slip.
The opening reception for this work (entitled: Audible Shapes) and the whole Material, Sounds, and Black Mountain College is tonight (Friday June 7th) from 5:30-8.
