Working in my jail today!
Just finished up cutting these 2 holes. They will become doors for 2 of the bathrooms in the upstairs accommodation.
Follow along with the @oldmarshalljail if your interested in our project and what I spend nearly half my time doing these days.
Also we are close to getting a real timeline for completion.
We have 1900 square feet of artist studios or commercial space on the street level in the old Sheriffs department.
Cheaper by far than anything you will find Asheville. Great location in the heart of downtown Marshall.
Let me know if you wanna be a part of something special. Hit me up for details.

One of the big projects Jessie and I have been working on is catching the main spring on the land and building a tank system to hold the water and deliver it to all the supply pipes.
In truth this has been a long process that started before Jessie showed up, but we’ve really made it a priority with all the current infrastructure projects going on at the land.
I plumbed the love to this hydrant 2 years ago when I ran all my main supply lines… awaiting this day.
We just hooked the supply lines to the water tanks… and it all totally works.
700 gallons of gravity feed spring water delivered right to your fingertips!!!!
Thanks to my awesome assistant @jcm.ceramics for all your help with this project!

It feels like a million years ago when we had our grand opening for Flowers and Clay at the land.
It looked so good and now it looks like this.
I’m in the midst of another big infrastructure project.
After the big flood in July we decided that we needed to increase of storm drain capacity.
Which would coincide well with the plan to run electric to all the outbuildings… and probably throw in some water supply lines while the ditches are open.
Anyway this is what my life currently looks like. One big mess.

It may have been the funnest year yet!!! The photos were certainly great and the game was a total nail biter. With team Australia squeaking out a narrow victory over team Mexico.
Thanks to everyone who came out to the 4th annual family kickball game on. The island in Marshall.

A lot of times my friends ask me what I’ve been doing, and I’ll tell them that I’m renovating the old jail that we own… and they’ll say something to the effect of “but what are you doing artistically?”… and I’ll say “I’m renovating the old jail that we own” because that is what I’m doing artistically!!!
A lot of people know me as a potter and that’s great. I love pottery and I’ll always make pottery.
But I knew a long time along that pottery alone was not going to satiate my creative needs.
And I also knew that creative thinking is a great asset… more so than most people give it credit for… and that art is really about problem solving and that type of thinking can get directed towards anything I want it to.
I use the same skill set when I’m working on the jail that I use in my pottery studio. It’s the same to me.
Everything is the Art.
The jail is most definitely the Art.
I’ve been working on figuring out how to make Art about and with this place since the day we bought it.
I had a big breakthrough today.
I’ve been messing around with this idea for a bit and today it just clicked.
We are taking everything in the jail back to its original surface. That means removing a LOT of paint.
I’m always thinking about how materials behave, how to preserve the character of this place while also changing it into not a jail, and how to combine all of that thinking into something interesting and creative.
Basically, I’ve been thinking a lot about what to do with all this paint!
I figured out how to “harvest” big areas of it from the metal.
The surfaces are incredible and it records the years of graffiti in really interesting abstract ways.
It’s kinda like a “readymade” painting.
Anyway, it felt like it was cool so I figured I’d share it with the internet.

I de-installed my work from the recent Material Sound exhibition at the @bmcmuseum today.
The pieces I made were raw clay and designed to be temporal. Only existing for the duration of the exhibition.
The raw clay will be slaked down and returned to its plastic state to become some other shape that will be fired.
I brought one of my big tubs into town to put all the work into.
I figured we should have done fun with it, so we made this video. A passerby on the street named Jadeveon (I think) interested in what we were doing and was game to play along.
It’s a fun moment in time in an increasingly intense and seemingly insane world.
Working with raw clay without attachment to a finished outcome is a good reminder to keep it all in perspective and not take everything so seriously.
It’s fun and liberating to take your own art and chuck it into a big tub over the head of a random dude on the sidewalk in downtown Asheville.
I feel like we hit the winning shot on this one y’all!!!
Thanks for playing along Black Mountain College Museum.
I hope all y’all in Oz appreciate this little ditty @caleb_k
And @jenn8grossman up in NYC!
