Filling up the studio.
Firing this coming week… gonna be a bunch of greenware going in the the kiln that’s for sure!
It’s been a blur the past few days.
I almost postponed the firing because of all the stuff we’ve got going on to get ready for our grand opening in July.
We have enough pots to pull it off, but it’s hard for me to truly get excited about work that’s been around for a bit… even if it’s just from April.
My whole attitude towards life hinges on enthusiasm and I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t fire before the home show. I would feel like I left something on the table.
Since I’ll be teaching for the 3 weeks leading up to the home show on July 20-21… this is my only window.
So as usual, I jumped out of it.

Filling up the studio.
Marshall’s mermaid parade never disappoints. Yet another reason why we are so partial to Marshall.

“Audible Shapes” will be up at @bmcmuseum till August 31st. We had a great opening reception last night, but it was noisy with all the talking of course.
If your in Asheville, I would really recommend going to check out the show during a quieter time so you can really experience the audio.
It’s the full deal.
I really like this work, and the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and collaborate with @jenn8grossman has been a great experience.
Thanks to the whole staff for being so awesome.

Tristan likes what he hears.
My installation at the @bmcmuseum is a collaboration with NYC sound artist @jenn8grossman
She came out to the land and recorded the sounds of that place. The sounds of the natural world that surrounds me while I work. The cacophony of frogs at dusk and the sound of the stream.
She also recorded sounds from the studio. The processes and tools that I used to make these pieces.
We then installed speakers in all the vessels that play back the sounds that have been composed and all mixed together.
All the pieces are raw wild clay. They were transported and installed at the leather hard stage. Each piece is coated in a liquid clay slip.
The opening reception for this work (entitled: Audible Shapes) and the whole Material, Sounds, and Black Mountain College is tonight (Friday June 7th) from 5:30-8.

It’s time to officially introduce my newest assistant @t.glosby
Tristan has been working with me for the past 3 months and has officially completed his 3 month trial period. I’m excited to announce that everything is going great, we both like each other and he will be staying on through the @woodfirenc conference next May.
Aside from being a wheelbarrow model, Tristan is a fantastic person and aspiring potter with a bright future ahead of him.
He’s already done a lot for his age, thanks to folks like @alindsayo and @dan_finnegan_pottery he comes to us with a good knowledge base and good habits.
Definitely give him a follow and see what this year holds for him.
Tristan’s personal studio is at the @clayspaceasheville which is the ceramics collective that I founded nearly 15 years ago in the River Arts District.
He spends one day a week working on his own work and staffing the gallery there and one day a week working with me on whatever crazy project we happen to be working on at the time.
I’ve been working on establishing an assistant program for a number of years now as a way of sharing my resources, paying it forward and showing the next generation a model for how to do this professionally.
It’s also good to get help with all the things I do.
Having an assistant or an apprentice is not as easy as it might seem.
It’s actually a huge responsibility that I take very seriously. It’s also harder than you might think to efficiently have someone help you and I’ve had to create systems for doing things over the years to make that work well.
It’s been a huge learning experience for everyone, but one I’m glad to continue.
Working with someone who has a good attitude like Tristan certainly helps.
I’ve got high hopes for this young man, so stay tuned for more on our adventures together.

As we near the grand opening for Flowers + Clay on July 20-21, I’ve been looking back to the beginnings of the land project to remind myself of how far we have come.
At 27 I graduated from university and bought the house you see in the background, which I proceeded to intentionally set on fire, which is the quickest and cheapest way to get rid of a house.
That was the beginning of it all.
I partially renovated an airstream and moved it out to the land. I built an outhouse and started building the big kiln in the summer of 2017.
I had really had no idea what I was getting myself into but looking back on it I think I had the right balance of perseverance and naïveté to be able to pull this crazy thing off.
Thanks to everyone who has been a part of this and helped me out through the years.
It’s truly been a team effort.

The addition to the clay barn is complete. It’s a good feeling to get this crossed off the list.
It’s become one of my favorite barns on the land. It’s a really interested space that is terraced into the hillside. It especially feels good when it’s empty.
Figured I’d share an image before I fill it up with stuff.
The whole land project is an exercise in order of operations.
I’m actually trying to build a gallery right now but in order to do that I need to dry in the assistant studio so I can bring power to that building, but in order to dry in the studio I need to finish the clay barn addition so I could move all the materials out of the studio building.
I swear it makes sense.
It’s exhausting but ultimately it’s going to work out and it’s gonna look great for Flowers + Clay in July!!!!

I’ve been pretty overwhelmed with all the things on the list of things to do, and often pretty disillusioned with the internet, but I’m feeling it tonight.
And it’s high time that I give a huge social media shout out to my dad, Joe Klein for everything he brings to the table and most recently for coming in for a weekend of barn Rasta construction projects.
We are working hard to get the new gallery ready for the grand opening of Flowers + Clay this summer, and making a new studio for a second assistant, and expanding the wild clay processing facility, and a million other projects.
It’s enough to make any persons head spin, but Joe is the cool head that prevails… always has been.
I count myself as a very fortunate person and having Joe in my life is amongst the most fortunate events to transpire.
I’ve been estranged from my biological father for essentially my entire adult life, but Joe has always been there for me. From the time I was 8 to the current date. Unconditionally.
It’s dark right now as I finish up another 12 hour work day at the land and I can’t help but think about all that has transpired here and how much of it Joe has had a hand in. He’s certainly taught me a lot about carpentry but most importantly he’s taught me to be the best person I can be.
I don’t think Joe really set out to be my Dad. He was always just my Joe. That’s why he was so good, and what I needed. You can’t show up and proclaim to be someone’s Dad, but you certainly can earn that title over the course of 30 years of consistently putting in the time.
So, here it is, all of my appreciation for this man and all he brings to the table.
Hats off to you Joe!
