Another image from the Taylor Clay brick company. Extruding dies for different brick shapes sitting in a pile in the mechanical room. It’s very interesting to see what impacts me when I visit these places and how those “sources” find their way into my work. It’s often not in the way I planned or expected. When I first started going down to the brick plants I thought what I was “getting” was the clay… Which does happen, but the things that I didn’t expect to get, and the things might end up mattering most in the long run are theses moments, the memories of dust covered tools unused in who knows how long. This image rocks me to the core… It’s hard to say why, and I don’t really need to know, all that matters is the feeling. #sources #sourceinspiration #taylorclay #bricktour #brickmaking #apotterslife #adventure #community

It’s been a busy day and I’m only just getting around to posting some more of the images from yesterday’s North Carolina brick tour. This is one of my favorites. A pile of bricks and one red hot brick just pulled from the kiln. At Statesville Brick. #redhotbrick #bricktour #ncbrick #statesvillebrick #apotterslife #community #wildclay

North Carolina brick tour 2015 in full effect. We had a great visit with Adam Foster, a third generation brick maker, at Statesville Brick talking about wild clay and the intersection of manufacturing and hand making in America. Statesville Brick has been in operation since 1904 and making bricks at the current plant since 1924. They specialize in “tumbled” brick and fire their kilns entirely with sawdust. With @catherine_lemaire_lozier who is a student at @ttucraftcenter working with me this week on a wild clay research project. @merril and Grace of the @centerforcraft. It’s been fun working with and getting to know designer @bpatrickflynn over the past couple of weeks. We’re working on a project that is still a little bit of a secret at this point…but the details will be revealing themselves soon. In the meantime, here is a image I made of Brian when we were having a little fun exploring. #brianflynn #design #designer #ceramicdesign #adventure #apotterslife

Floyd. I leave you today feeling the nostalgic pull of your green pastures. The memories of your gravel roads always in my mind. My childhood is written in your clouds, my biggest changes occurred under your skies. I know that the reality of this place doesn’t always match the idealism I often extend to it, but on days like this I don’t care. Floyd, you are a magical secret I want to believe in, a poem I want to recite on the top of a mountain, a song I want to sing when no one is listening, and a novel I want to write about everything that is well and good on this green earth. That is how much I love you. Today, I love you to the moon and back. #hometown #floyd #floydva #apotterslife #adventure

Saying goodbye to Floyd today. @16handsfloyd studio tour is all wrapped up, truck is packed and it’s time for me to get back to Asheville and back to work. No matter how much work I sell, Old Boy never feels any less full. It’s moments like these that I wish I had gotten involved in a less heavy medium. The great schlep continues. #oldboythetruck #floydva #floyd #16handsfloydva #16handspottery #apotterslife #c #adventure

Last year at the @16handsfloyd studio tour my buddy Matt of @mountain_biscuit got a cup that he said “made him feel like a warrior on a battlefield” which is of course one of the greatest compliments that I can think of receiving. This year Matt couldn’t make it out, but his partner Teagan of @tittlehats did and picked up a dirt plate to match his warrior cup. I think judging by the photos they sent me, Matt is still feeling the power of the wild clay. @potsinaction #warriorcup #dirtplate #pia #potsinaction #community #apotterslife

Great times on the @16handsfloyd studio tour with @kylecarpenterpottery. I’ve known Kyle since 2000 and even though we both live in the same town and even both work in the same neighborhood, we haven’t spent this much quality time together in a while. It was a true joy. Kyle is off to the St. Croix studio tour this week. Safe travels to him. I’m sure he’s gonna crush it. #kylecarpenterfanclub #16handsfloydva #16handspottery #apotterslife #ceramics #community
