Going to huge piles of clay never gets old, especially when your wild clay geek out partner is Michael Hunt of @bandanapottery . I should have quite a stockpile of exciting new clays to play with by the time @ridgelinepottery shows up for a visit in August. #wildclay #wildclayresearch #localclay #localmaterials #terreism #wildclaygeekout #apotterslife #ceramics

Scenes from the gardens out on the land yesterday. When I bought my land 8 years ago it was a swap and I had zero interest in doing things like growing flowers. Now it looks like this and one of my favorite pastimes is working in the gardens. It’s funny how your priorities in life change and evolve. I still can’t remember the names of half the stuff I have, and I’m still much better at making the places where the flowers grow than actually growing the flowers… But I’m learning. #gardens #landproject #apotterslife

Another win for the Crystal Balkers last night to move to 3-1 on the year. I always played sports, it’s been a huge part of my life and at points my identity. These days I don’t have a ton of time to be a serious athlete… So that’s why I play adult kickball. It’s active enough and satisfies some of my competitive spirit, but you can’t take it too seriously… I mean it’s adult kickball. #crystalballers #kickball #adultkickball #apotterslife #community

It was a truly fantastic day hanging with @benowenpottery down in Seagrove, NC. We got to go out the Mitchfield pit to dig some clay and hear Ben explain its history, from the legend of its discovery to its current situation (more on all that soon). One of the things that matters to me most about all this wild clay business is the opportunities that it creates to build relationships with people. Much more so than with bagged materials, wild clay work creates an association with place, it offers a story to accompany the pot, and most importantly it puts you face to face with the people behind the clay. Today I got some clay, but what I really got was a lasting memory of digging that clay with Ben Owen III. I got a chance to connect with Ben, a person who I admire greatly and truly is the best ambassador and advocate for North Carolina pottery out there. I got to hear the history of pottery in our state, from someone who has really lived it, while holding one of the materials that the history is made from, in my hands. I got an experience… And no one can ever tell how these experiences shape our lives…but I’m excited to find out what comes of it, and certainly the least I can say was that it was a fun adventure. #benowen #mitchfieldclay #wildclay #wildclayresearch #localclay #localmaterials #ncpottery #ceramics #apotterslife #community

Some image highlights from a visit to @danielpottery and @kayetjohnston place today. The pictures barely do the job of telling the story of what these two amazing makers are creating with their work and their space. #johnstonpottery #seagrove #potterytour #kilntour #ncpottery #apotterslife #ceramics

It’s been a great whirlwind of a wild clay adventure lately. Largely due to this fantastic person. Steve is one of the most knowledgable and giving people I can imagine knowing. He’s a true blessing in my life and to the greater clay community. Our friendship started when he found on of my community bricks and invited me down to the brick plant where he works. Now we are going all over state eating wild clay and generally geeking out about bricks and dirt, two of my favorite things in this world. It truly has been an amazing time of life for me. My interest has been more than just unlocked, the doors of possibility have been completely blown off. There is no telling where this can lead, but I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be muddy. #wildclaygeekout #eatingwildclay #wildclay #community #apotterslife #ceramics #mudintheblood
