Bricks.
We’ve made somewhere close to 3000 so far. We start firing them next week. The great schlep is about to begin…

The brick factory loves the kids. They are not afraid to get their hands dirty (most of them). They routinely make the most interesting bricks. They rarely feel the pressure to say something profound with the bricks, like a lot of adults do, and because of that they make the most profound bricks.
Most importantly they are the future. It brings me great joy to offer a positive creative experience to children. I remember things like this making a huge impact on me when I was young. I believe you can make a difference in the world this way.
And my most favorite thing is the idea that these children will grow up and always have a brick that they made here in Marshall. They will always have a connection to this place. They can come back and find their bricks and say things like “that’s my brick I made when I was a kid!!”
That makes me happen to think about and makes this whole crazy project worthwhile. 📸 by @simplylivingmore by @carlyalbee

Last two public days of the Brick Factory are today (Friday) and Saturday. We’ve made over 2,000 bricks so far and it’s still not to late for you to be included.
If you’ve been meaning to make it out and haven’t yet… now is the time for action. I don’t want you to feel disappointed when the monument is installed at the jail and you don’t have a brick in it.

The brick factory has been a huge success with over 2000 bricks produced so far… but all things must come to an end.
The factory will be open Friday and Saturday from 11-5 for the next 3 weeks. Then production at the Old Marshall Jail site will cease.
We still have our programs with local schools and a couple of special events planned, but the main public face of the project will end November 18th.
That still leaves you 6 days to come out and add your voice to the amazing tapestry of voices that have participated in the project so far.
Check out communitybrick.org for more info.

The brick factory is open today (Friday 20th) and tomorrow from 11-7.
Last weekend I had my nephews come and work at the factory. They did a great job at so many things like leading the jail tours and working on the demolition of the building… and most importantly SIGN MAKING! Here’s a great image of Bryce and Liam hard at work.

I’ve had some pretty intense experiences at the brick factory since we opened it. And some pretty amazing ones too.
These bricks represent both of those experiences.
Two weeks ago I watched as a older woman who was raised in Madison County make the brick about the confederacy while a young alternative transplant woman made the brick about healing right across the table. Everyone was aware about what was happening and being expressed. It’s not like we didn’t notice what was going on.
The important thing for me was that we had a conversation about it… and it was civil. I watched as these two women traded letters back and forth to stamp their beliefs in the clay. “You need an E? Here you go, I have one”. As we talked about monuments and what they mean and why speech is protected and important.
Nobody got called a racist. Nobody got called a dirty hippy. We just looked each other in the eyes and tried to find a little common ground in this crazy world.
I’ll be honest… I was glad to get the brick about the confederacy. Because this project is about recording the feelings and beliefs of all the people who live here or pass through. That belief is real out here, and I don’t want to pretend like it’s not. And I definitely don’t want this project to only represent the feeling and emotions of only the young alternative people who have moved in.
This place is complicated. And the monument that we make needs to be real and representative of that.
These two bricks felt like a success as we strive to listen to what everyone believes in and heal a little bit at a time.
Just a reminder. The brick factory will be open Friday and Saturday from 11-7. So come on out and add your voice.

The mayor came and made a brick today! Everyone is getting involved. The response to the Old Marshall Brick Project has been outstanding… but it can always be better. Don’t miss out on this. We will be running the factory into November. Check out communitybrick.org for scheduling.
Thanks to @lilunkle for running the factory today.
