I’d like to put a HUGE shout out to my boy @willdickertceramics for getting married yesterday in our gorgeous Virginia homeland. Aside from being one of the funniest people I know and having a great demeanor, will is also one of the top up and coming makers in our adopted homeland of North Carolina. He is an integral part of the Mountain PreHEAT team and we will certainly be raising a glass to him at the @woodfirenc conference.
Here’s to you buddy.

I’m in Iceland for the next week with these fabulous people. Expect lots of waterfalls, dramatic rock formations and hot spring photos. This is my first time being here and the first impressions are HOLY SHIT THIS PLACE IS UNBELIEVABLE.
And the company really could not be better. With @carolinaflowers_ @rebundles @rickyriboldi @ajsanteiro @lkwavra

Making peace with moving on.
I think it’s more telling how you leave a place than how you found it. Beginnings are usually exciting. So much potential. Everything is new.
Leaving is hard, especially if it’s not something you want to do. I’ve seen people trash a place or throw people under the bus. Flipping the bird as the bridges burn.
I’ve also seen people leave with grace and it always feels like the better road to take.
I’m not perfect and I don’t purport to be. I know there have been times in my life when I haven’t done things they way they should be done… But I learned from them and I try to live by the rule of best practices.
How you leave a place is important. It’s important to me that I leave in a way that people feel like I am welcomed back anytime.
Because we all live somewhere. Because we are our reputations. Mostly just because it’s the right thing to do.
I’m at peace with this place…and on to bigger things.

Last year on this day I was in Thailand lighting lanterns and awaiting the arrival of my girl @msemilypie. People seem pretty down on 2016, but it was a big year for us. We toured SE Asia together. Bought a house and an old jail in Marshall, NC. It was the biggest year of my career and one of the best years of my life. I got to teach at @arrowmont_school And present at the Utilitarian Clay Conference. I started the Baltimore Mobile Community Brick Factory with my good friend @thingsonshelves and made the best ceramics of my life.
It was certainly full of it’s own set of challenges and our concerns about the current political and environmental situation in NC, the nation, and the world remain very serious to us… But personally it was a huge success.
Tonight I’m glad to be relaxing at Folly Beach with the best of friends @jaguokas and @jesseabelle and my love Emily. It’s not Thailand but right now there are very few places and people that I’d rather be bringing in the new year with.
It’s gonna be a big one coming up. I wish all of you all the best.

The end of an era.
Five years ago I started a collective space in the building formerly know as the Wilkie building. By the end of this month that space will no longer exist. It’s been a good run, but such is the way of things down in the River Arts District.
In some ways the space never reached its full potential due to years of uncertainty with the building ownership. But I’m proud that this space was an affordable home to many artists over the past 5 years. It was a dirty place off the beaten path in a neighborhood with fewer and fewer untrodden paths. It was a place to make art, listen to loud music and not give a fuck what people though. We made it ours in our own way. And for that I am grateful.
I love this space for what it was and the people who were a part of it.
Long live Foundation Clay.
