It was such an honor to interview John Ledford and Randy Bradford in the jail today. John was the Sheriff of Madison County from 1998-2009 and Randy was his chief deputy during that time. They had LOTS OF STORIES ABOUT THE OLD JAIL. It was a truly fascinating day.
In this image John and Randy show Josh where inmates tried to escaped through the ceiling at one point. There is still a patch left over from their attempt.

I’m moving most of my posts about the old Marshall Jail to our new feed @oldmarshalljail but I couldn’t resist this one of legendary Sheriff Jesse James Bailey busting up stills in from of the jail during his term as Sheriff of Madison County from 1920-22.

Creative possibilities from a history of incarceration. This is the old Madison County Jail. I heard a rumor yesterday that the Kent (formerly Wilkie) building was sold to an out of town investor. Foundation Clay Collective has called that building home since its inception in 2011. If this is true, the sale continues the development arc in the River Arts District which will likely result in the displacement of more artists. I’ve called that neighborhood home for 14 years now and will continue to do so for as long as possible. Today however, I am feeling glad to continue on the process of controlling my own destiny. #madisoncountyjailproject #madisoncountyjail #marshallncforlife #marshallnc #apotterslife

This is where we woke up today. This is where we live now. This is our house. It’s still kinda hard to believe it’s true. This is the nicest house I’ve ever lived in in my whole life. The first house I bought as an adult, I intentionally set on fire because it was in such bad shape. I always figured that I have to scrape and scratch for everything I got in this world and that would include buying a piece of shit house and renovating it with sweat equity… Somehow yesterday we just moved into this house. Our immediate to do list includes painting, fixing a couple screens, and mowing the grass. There certainly are other projects to tackle but they don’t include fixing rotten floor joists!!
